A new phase of major maintenance along Linnaeusstraat begins on Monday, August 24, closing the main Oosterpark entrance on the street to cyclists for four weeks.
Crews will dig up the section between Eerste and Tweede van Swindenstraat to replace aging cables, pipes, and tram tracks.
Pedestrians can still enter the park through a narrow walkway off Linnaeusstraat, but cyclists coming from Mauritskade must detour to other park gates following pink detour signs.
Eerste van Swindenstraat remains open to through traffic throughout the project.
Broader upgrades across Amsterdam Oost
The short-term closure is part of an extensive redevelopment project run by the Gemeente Amsterdam that stretches along Linnaeusstraat and parts of Middenweg through late 2027.
Subsurface utilities and road beds in the neighborhood have reached the end of their operational lifespan, requiring replacement of water mains, sewage systems, and electrical lines alongside the removal of an old gas main.
Once underground works finish, the street layout will feature broader footpaths, refreshed asphalt, and more than 50 newly planted trees to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
Work between Eerste and Tweede van Swindenstraat is scheduled to wrap up early next year.
Long-term transit adjustments
The extensive works continue to cause notable disruptions for public transit riders in the east of the city.
Municipal transit agency GVB has adjusted tram operations, running tram 19 only as far as Muiderpoort station.
A temporary shuttle service, tram 29, connects Diemen Sniep to Oostpoort to bridge the gap.
More than 4,000 daily commuters rely on the affected corridor, with many facing extra transfers and added travel time until the tracks reopen.
