A video of mice darting through Schiphol’s departure hall spread on social media in the week up to Sunday 11 October.
The airport admits more mice are being seen and says it takes extra measures where needed.
It says this matches the usual seasonal pattern after busy periods in the terminal.
A good year for mice
Corinne Kalisvaart of Fauna Haarlemmermeer, who knows the area around the airport well, says this is an exceptionally good year for mice.
A dry spring meant fewer burrows flooded, and a long warm spell gave them plenty of food.
Mice inside buildings are usually house mice, however, and Kalisvaart suspects other factors are also at play.
Cleaners under pressure
Herrie Hoogenboom of the union FNV Schoonmaak says the mice have been a problem for as long as he has been around Schiphol.
He blames too few cleaners, a heavy workload and low pay, and says more investment in cleaning would help.
Schiphol says cleaning matters, but mice get in easily on its open site, so it also relies on prevention, hygiene, monitoring, building measures and, where needed, a specialist firm.
