A new Cats by producers Hans Cornelissen and Ruud de Graaf opens at Koninklijk Theater Carré on Thursday 15 October, set in the Rijksmuseum instead of the usual rubbish dump.
The cats first step out of The Night Watch, then take on looks inspired by painters such as Vermeer, Picasso and Mondrian.
The producers wanted a fresh version rather than a copy, with the music and story left untouched.
Nurlaila Karim as Grizabella
Nurlaila Karim plays Grizabella, the outcast cat who is finally chosen for a new life, in a look based on Klimt.
Karim, 51, says she is now the oldest Grizabella in any professional production in the world.
She was first offered the role in 2006 but chose Dorothy in The Wiz instead.
For Weemoed, the Dutch version of Memory, she had to soften the big voice she used as Tina Turner and sing more quietly.
Florus van Rooijen refreshed Gerrit Komrij’s earlier translation, and the T.S. Eliot estate approved the new text.
Cats runs at Carré until Sunday 25 October.
