Local residents gathered at Proxy, a neighbourhood gallery on the Parnassusweg in Zuid, on the afternoon of Sunday 27 September to celebrate its first year.
The celebration included performance art that drew plenty of gasps from the audience.
People can drop in at Proxy for coffee and to watch performances, and it has become a meeting place for artists from around the world.
“I was recently chatting with David Lynch’s son,” one person at the gallery said.
A museum’s early presence
Proxy was set up by Hartwig, a contemporary art museum across the road that will open in 2028.
The gallery sits on the edge of the Zuidas business district, and Hartwig director Beatrix Ruf thinks the area could use some contemporary art.
“Not much has happened culturally in this area yet,” the German museum director said.
“Even though the Rietveld Academie is at the end of this street.”
A meal in the collection
The gallery takes a very broad view of what counts as art. According to Ruf, even the Pad Thai served there is an artwork.
“It is Rirkrit Tiravanija’s work from 1990,” she said of the dish. “We have it in the collection.
He shifted the idea of art from the object to hospitality.”
