Amsterdam police’s transport team found two live pythons inside a car on Wednesday 21 October during a routine vehicle relocation, the team posted on Facebook.

The snakes were in the car’s centre console.

Officers also found a box on the rear seat holding live mice and a fish.

Animals taken to a shelter

Police took the car and the animals to the police station in Hoofddorp.

The pythons, the mice and the fish were then transferred to an animal shelter.

Owning a python is not illegal in the Netherlands, but there are specific rules for transporting them, including enough space and ventilation.

Python found at Schiphol in July

In July, security staff at Schiphol caught a Canadian woman trying to smuggle a ball python onto a plane hidden in her bra.

She told officers she had found the snake in her Amsterdam hotel room.

The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) said it strongly doubted her account and pointed out that protected animals cannot simply be taken along on a trip.

That snake was also taken to a shelter.

If the pythons have you thinking about keeping an animal of your own in the city, start with what owning a pet in Amsterdam involves.
