Residents of the Spaarndammerbuurt, Houthaven and Westelijke Eilanden are fighting plans for an express tram through their neighbourhoods.
The tram is one of four options in a study of new transport links between Sloterdijk and Centraal for Haven-Stad, where up to 70,000 homes could be built.
Routes through a park and a harbour
One route crosses the Houthavenpark, built on top of the Spaarndammertunnel to link the neighbourhoods on either side of the busy road.
Resident Marjolein Lotsy says a raised, fenced line would divide them instead, with a school right beside the route.
As the Van Diemenstraat is too narrow for a tram and cars, another option puts one of them on a new quay through the Oude Houthaven.
Residents say homes with harbour views would get a tram every few minutes, and that these routes were added late with little consultation.
No decision yet
A city spokesperson says an extra bus or tram cannot meet future demand, and that residents’ concerns will weigh in the final choice.
Hundreds of responses have come in, and the council was due to discuss the plans on Thursday 22 October.
