Residents in Zuidoost are voicing frustration over plans to change Amsterdam’s metro line numbers in 2028.
Under the new system, existing routes numbered 50 to 54 will be replaced with line names running from M1 to M4.
Local attachment to existing lines
The numbers have strong ties to the Bijlmer, where the city opened its first metro line in 1977.
Passersby at Kraaiennest station pointed out that lines 53 and 54 are local cultural fixtures, appearing even on neighbourhood T-shirts.
Some riders expressed concern that the overhaul will cause confusion, especially among older residents accustomed to the established routes.
Changes to numbers and colours
Under the new timetable, line 52 becomes M1, line 51 becomes M2, lines 50 and 53 combine into M3, and line 54 becomes M4.
The transport authority said the simplified naming makes routes easier to remember and understand.
Line colours will also change in 2028 to make them easier to distinguish for colour-blind passengers.
