Hundreds of businesses in Amsterdam are facing severe operational delays because the regional electrical grid has reached maximum capacity. Grid operators TenneT and Liander currently have nearly 500 local companies on waiting lists for new or expanded power connections.

Demand for electricity has surged as commercial enterprises move away from natural gas to power heavy machinery and heating systems.

Projections show that the city will require up to four times more electricity by 2050, but network construction is unable to match the speed of this industrial transition.

Impact on local investment

The persistent capacity limits have led several companies to rethink their local presence, raising concerns over economic growth and job creation in the region.

Cable manufacturer TKF famously canceled plans to build a facility in the port district, opting instead to invest 130 million euros and roughly 150 jobs in Eemshaven.

Other businesses, such as green hydrogen firm Ecolog, remain stuck on waiting lists while trying to establish operations locally. This situation closely aligns with broader regional challenges regarding grid congestion stalling business growth across the province.

Alternative energy workarounds

To cope with the lack of direct network capacity, some companies are turning to localized temporary fixes.

Supplement producer Winclove Probiotics in Amsterdam-Noord initially used a leased diesel generator after relocating before installing commercial batteries to store energy during off-peak hours.

In industrial areas like the port, companies are forming local cooperatives to share allocated grid access during quieter periods.

While business groups acknowledge that these arrangements help maintain daily operations, energy analysts emphasize that private storage and shared connections cannot replace the essential large-scale expansion of the physical power grid.
