A recently renovated roundabout at Statenjachtstraat in the Banne neighbourhood of Amsterdam-Noord has left residents puzzled. A rubbish bin has been installed directly in the middle of the cycle path.
Local cyclists described the placement as ridiculous, with some residents initially suspecting it was a joke. Most agreed the obstacle was an inconvenient hazard on a cycle lane.
A temporary bollard substitute
The city confirmed the placement was intentional rather than a prank. Officials needed a bollard to block cars from driving onto the route, but had none available at the time.
Workers instead placed the rubbish bin, fitted with red-and-white reflective shields, as a temporary barrier to protect cyclists from cars. A municipal spokesperson said the bin will be replaced with a standard bollard in the near future.
