Cities cut parking spaces to build more homes

Major Dutch cities are cutting back on parking spaces to clear land for new housing developments, while encouraging the use of public transport and shared vehicles.

To reach ambitious construction targets, local governments are being forced to make strict choices about how to allocate scarce urban space, particularly in city centres.

Buyout options for developers

Municipalities such as Eindhoven and Tilburg are offering developers buyout arrangements. Under these plans, builders construct fewer parking bays in exchange for a financial contribution toward shared cars and public transit.

The removal of parking spaces has met with opposition in some areas. Residents, local businesses, and politicians have voiced concerns about the shifting priorities on city streets.
