Amsterdam has designated 88 new municipal monuments and five protected cityscape areas over the past five years. The city now counts nearly ten thousand monumental and historic buildings.
The newest protections place an emphasis on Post ’65 heritage, which includes buildings and neighbourhoods constructed after 1965. Recent additions include the Groenhoven and Gouden Leeuw apartment complexes in Zuidoost and the Plan van Gool in Amsterdam-Noord.
Military structures on the Marineterrein, industrial sites, and homes in Zuid were also granted monument status. The city has published an interactive digital map detailing the architecture, history, and former occupants of each site.
Community centre in Oost
In Oost, Buurtcentrum Transvaal at Danie Theronstraat 2 was made a municipal monument on 16 December 2025. Completed in 1975, the centre was designed by architects Pi de Bruijn and Ruud Snikkenburg, who won the 1976 Merkelbach Prize for the project.
Heritage association Heemschut first requested protection for the Transvaal building in 2017. Built with an elevated gymnasium that creates a gateway through the street, the centre housed community facilities and later became a base for the initiative BOOST in 2016.
The status requires municipal heritage officials to weigh cultural and historical values during future renovations. In the coming years, the fifty-year-old Transvaal building faces upgrades to improve energy performance while preserving its original glass facades and steel framing.
