Work to redesign the Plantage Middenlaan began on Tuesday 13 October, and part of the street at the corner with Plantage Kerklaan is now closed.

The cycle paths will become wide pavements, and cyclists will ride on the roadway instead.

Cyclists adjust to missing signs

Many cyclists are still getting used to the new layout at the corner, and the correct signs are not yet up everywhere.

Community liaison manager Conny Chan said she understands that the situation is still a little unclear.

Not everyone is happy, and one young woman walking past said the whole route from Muiderpoort to the Plantage was terrible.

Boulders protect Holocaust Museum and Schouwburg

Large boulders have stood on the road and cycle path for several years as security measures for the Holocaust Museum and the Schouwburg.

In 2024 a local resident nicknamed them Halsema’s dolmens and said he would be glad to see them go.

If all goes to plan, the work will be finished in April 2027.

With cyclists moving onto the roadway, it is worth brushing up on the rules of the road for Amsterdam cyclists.
