Bleekemolens Race Planet, the Amsterdam karting track, will close on 1 November because it cannot get enough electricity to switch to electric karts.
The business, owned by the family of former Formula 1 driver Michael Bleekemolen, made the switch easily at its Delft branch, but the Amsterdam power grid is too full.
Unused capacity next door
Employee Michael Leuven says a nearby business on the same site has far more capacity than it uses, but the two cannot share it.
Roof solar panels proved unsuitable, and a solar canopy over the car park with a battery would not have supplied enough power and would have cost €800,000 to €1 million.
The expected wait for extra grid capacity keeps slipping, with dates as late as 2036 mentioned.
Staff and city response
Only a few staff may be able to move to Delft, and some have worked at the Amsterdam track for 25 years.
A city spokesperson says the municipality looked at solar panels, energy saving and sharing capacity with neighbouring firms, but none of these worked out technically or financially.
The city adds that, with Liander, it helped more than 300 Amsterdam businesses get space on the grid last year.
