Cyclists who use the Haarlemmerdijk, the busy cycle highway between the city centre and West, face a year and a half of disruption from Monday 26 October.
Liander and Waternet are replacing the ageing gas and water pipes under the street, and the work is expected to run until the end of January 2028.
The street will be done in stages to keep the nuisance down, but cyclists, residents and shopkeepers should still expect serious disruption.
Closed for the first week
Work starts at the Eenhoornsluis end, near the Korte Prinsengracht, and the Haarlemmerstraat will be closed completely for the first week.
Cyclists coming from West will be sent along the Haarlemmer Houttuinen, and those leaving the centre will be diverted via the Brouwersgracht.
One narrow lane in working hours
After that first stage, cyclists can ride through the street again, but between 07.00 and 17.00 the road will be narrowed and they will be funnelled through a single narrow lane past the works.
The work zone, and the narrow lane with it, will gradually move towards the Haarlemmerplein, and the street will open fully again outside working hours.
