Tenways, a Chinese-Dutch bike maker with its head office in Amsterdam, is the new owner of the bicycle brand Sparta.

The sale was announced by the trustees handling the bankruptcy of Sparta’s parent company, Accell.

The deal gives Tenways Sparta’s brand and property rights, among other things.

An Amsterdam-based bike maker

Tenways was founded in China in 2021. In Europe it sells electric city bikes and trekking bikes for longer distances.

Accell’s bankruptcy

Accell, which also owned Batavus, went bankrupt in August.

It ran into trouble during the coronavirus pandemic, when delivery times for parts grew longer, and consumer interest in bikes fell once the pandemic was over.

Earlier in October, Accell’s brands Koga, Babboe and Batavus were sold to the Singapore investor Dutech.

Sale of the remaining group

The trustees say Sparta was sold separately to get the best possible return for the bankrupt estate, and that the sale keeps the brand alive.

They will now carry on selling the rest of the Accell group.
