A group of Amsterdam taxi drivers has launched a dedicated booking app designed to offer a cheaper alternative for passengers and higher earnings for drivers.
The initiative aims to counter the high commission rates charged by major platforms such as Uber and Bolt, which drivers say can reach up to 50% of their fares.
Lower fees and shorter hours
Co-founder Ivo van Leeuwen, who previously drove for existing ride-hailing services, said that steep platform fees forced drivers to work excessively long days just to make a living.
By charging lower commissions, the app intends to make fares cheaper for customers while helping drivers earn enough without working dangerous, fatigue-inducing hours.
Growth across the capital
Nearly 1,300 of the roughly 7,500 taxi drivers operating in Amsterdam have already signed up to the platform, named NLCabs.
While the service is currently operating only in Amsterdam and the surrounding area, the founders plan to expand across the Netherlands as rider awareness grows.
