A section of Baarsjesweg will be closed in phases for over a year starting Monday 28 September. The work covers the stretch between Surinamestraat and Nepveusstraat and will run until the end of next year.
The municipality will first replace the water mains and the sewer system. Following underground repairs, the street will be redesigned with new trees, benches, rubbish bins, bike racks, and bicycle parking bays.
Car parking spaces along the water will be replaced by a green walking promenade similar to the one near Postjesweg. Once complete, car parking will only be permitted along the residential side of the street.
Phased closures and traffic access
The overhaul will take place in rolling sections lasting roughly three months each. The first segment, between Surinamestraat and Paramaribostraat, closes on 27 September until the end of this year, with the area around Nepveusstraat scheduled as the final phase next autumn.
Homes and businesses will remain accessible for pedestrians throughout the project. Cyclists can pass the work zones most of the time, though some diversions will be required.
Motorists trying to reach an address inside an active work zone can drive up to the physical closure, where turning spaces will be provided.
Meanwhile, the construction of a new quay wall continues between Nepveusstraat and the De Admiraal office building, with completion expected this autumn. Street renovations on that section will follow and are scheduled to finish in October next year.
