Court ushers usually stay out of the spotlight, but they carry out essential logistical duties inside the Amsterdam District Court.

A team of 32 ushers works at the court, with around 20 on duty every day to welcome visitors and manage practical matters during hearings.

Daily courtroom management

Ushers handle everything from making photocopies to offering tissues or water when people become emotional in court.

Certain precautions remain standard practice during proceedings, such as not leaving water pitchers near defendants to prevent them from being thrown at judges.

The behind-the-scenes look comes during the week of the rule of law, which runs through Tuesday.

Judges and legal professionals are visiting primary schools, secondary schools and universities across the country to give guest lessons.
