Major Dutch bicycle manufacturer Accell Group has been declared bankrupt by the district court in Amsterdam. The bankruptcy puts the future of several major cycling brands at risk, including the popular cargo bike brand Babboe, which is a common sight across Amsterdam streets.

Global Operations Face Insolvency

The court appointed administrators following weeks of severe financial strain. Court documents revealed that the group’s factory in Hungary has already halted production, while local insolvency proceedings are being opened across various European jurisdictions where the company operates.

Accell has its corporate headquarters in Amsterdam-Zuidoost and employs roughly 2,000 people across 15 countries. The company had already been restructuring its operations, which included closing its last remaining Dutch manufacturing plant in Heerenveen.

Compounding Financial Troubles

The manufacturing giant struggled with a massive inventory surplus after cycling demand plummeted following the pandemic boom. Heavy debt loads continued to weigh down the business despite multiple corporate acquisitions over recent years.

The business was also hit by major operational setbacks, most notably the large-scale recall of Babboe cargo bikes over safety concerns after frame failures were reported.

A debt restructuring deal in February transferred ownership to creditors, but efforts to find a long-term buyer or merger partner ultimately failed.

Administrators Seek Potential Restructuring

Court-appointed trustees stated that ongoing operating expenses could no longer be met. They are currently attempting to keep critical parts of the business functioning while contacting key suppliers.

The administrators are currently evaluating whether a restart of specific divisions in the Netherlands is possible, while exploring if international entities can be included in any prospective sale.
