A new neighborhood art project titled Wolken van IJburg invites local residents to look up at the sky and spot shapes in passing clouds. The community ideas will serve as the foundation for an artwork created by artist Yasser Ballemans.

Locals can photograph unusual cloud formations above IJburg and submit them with a note describing the figure, animal, or symbol they see. Beyond sending photos, residents will also participate directly in developing the final design.

Community workshops and submissions

The project is an initiative of Kunst op IJburg, organized alongside Stichting Natuurlijk IJburg, Factor IJ, and Ballemans. Organizers aim to encourage neighborhood connection as well as creativity.

Residents can participate through an online photo campaign or attend upcoming workshops hosted at local schools, community centers, and cultural venue Factor IJ. These sessions will explore the shapes and stories people find overhead.

Selecting the final design

A weighted lottery will assemble a diverse working group of IJburgers to collaborate directly with the artist and project organizers. This group will help decide how the submitted cloud figures are incorporated into the finished piece.

Because the design will develop directly from community contributions, its final appearance remains open. Once the design phase concludes, organizers will need to secure sponsors and funding before the artwork can be built.
