The Soep Salon has held what may be its last soup evening on Strandeiland, after six Thursday nights of cooking and eating together.
The final edition for now took place on Thursday 15 October at De Basket in Tagorepark, the first meeting place in the new neighbourhood.
Strandeiland’s first residents moved in only in February 2026, and much of the island is still undeveloped.
Cooking together at De Basket
Around a long table, guests chopped vegetables and chatted while organiser Thijs van de Loo cooked them in a large pot.
Once the soup was served, the IJburgse Blues Band played, and people talked or got up to dance.
The evening ended with a disco washing-up, as visitors washed and dried the dishes to upbeat music.
The Soep Salon is run by Klapstoel Collectief, which organises cultural and community activities to bring people together and prevent loneliness.
Van de Loo said bringing people together in such a young area is a challenge, but the early stage also creates room for new initiatives.
Whether the evenings will return is unclear because their funding is uncertain.
To bring your own neighbours together, a good start is finding volunteer work in Amsterdam.
