Work has begun to redesign Weesperstraat to make the road safer, quieter and greener. The changes are scheduled to take effect from 14 September.
As part of the overhaul, the speed limit will drop to 30 kilometres per hour. In some sections, the road will be narrowed from two lanes to a single lane in each direction.
The municipality will also add more greenery and flower boxes along the street to soften its appearance. Extra loading and unloading bays will be created on the right-hand side of the road.
Traffic flow and monitoring
Emergency services have been closely involved in planning the adjustments. The goal is to maintain traffic flow for local residents, businesses and visitors without causing extra congestion on surrounding roads.
City authorities plan to closely monitor the impact of the redesign. Officials will track traffic volumes, speeds, travel times and overall liveability, adjusting the street layout if necessary.
The temporary configuration will stay in place until the final works are completed in 2027.
