Amazon has announced an agreement to acquire DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based company behind the open source analytical database DuckDB.
The transaction is expected to close shortly, subject to customary closing conditions.
AWS and DuckLabs have worked together since 2024, focusing on cloud analytics and database performance.
Team moving to AWS
Once the deal closes, the Amsterdam team will join AWS.
Co-founders Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt will continue leading the team and overseeing the technical direction of the open source project.
AWS stated that the acquisition will help make its analytics tools faster and more cost-effective for customers.
Open source database remains independent
The transaction does not include the DuckDB open source project itself.
The database will remain free and open source under the independent DuckDB Foundation, distributed under the MIT license.
AWS confirmed that current DuckDB users will see no immediate changes to how the tool operates.
