A new traffic layout is officially in place along the entire length of the Weesperstraat. Drivers are now limited to 30 km/h and have access to only one lane instead of two.
Work to narrow the street began on 31 August and had already been implemented in sections. Those partial lane closures caused heavy congestion over the past week.
Monitoring for permanent redesign
The changes, referred to as the ‘Weesperknijp’, begin to reflect how the road will look permanently. The municipality will monitor the effects of the measures and incorporate the findings into the final street design, which is expected to be clarified by the end of the year.
The measure follows a trial in the summer of 2023 known as the ‘Weesperknip’, when the street was completely closed to traffic. That full closure caused major disruptions for residents, businesses, and emergency services.
