Work starts on 31 August to narrow sections of Weesperstraat from two driving lanes to one in each direction.
The construction will take place at night. Starting 14 September, the maximum speed limit on the street will also drop from 50 to 30 kilometres per hour.
The new street layout is part of an experimental trial that will run for approximately two months until the end of October.
Evaluation and future design
City officials will monitor traffic flow and gather feedback from local residents, business owners, and drivers during the testing period.
If the evaluation shows that changes are needed, the municipality plans to include those adjustments in a permanent design for Weesperstraat in late 2026.
The new approach follows an earlier test in the summer of 2023, known as the Weesperknip, which closed the entire street to through traffic.
That full closure caused heavy congestion and created delays for healthcare workers and emergency response services, leading the city to test lane reductions instead.
