American resident Flowerbikeman, known across Amsterdam as the Flowerbikeman for decorating city bicycles with flowers, has been detained for nearly a month over missing residency documents.
He is currently held at a foreigners detention centre in Rotterdam, where he is awaiting a court hearing next Friday to determine whether he may stay in the country.
Arrest and residency issues
Gregory was initially arrested earlier this month in connection with a separate case before a police judge. That criminal ruling was ultimately declared inadmissible because his probation conditions were unclear, leaving him with no penalty.
However, the proceedings alerted the immigration service IND that Gregory did not possess the required residence permits.
His lawyer, Christoph van Rijckevorsel, said there is a substantial chance of deportation, noting that Gregory does not speak Dutch well and may have misunderstood letters sent by the immigration authorities.
Years living in the city
Gregory moved to Amsterdam from the United States in 2018 with his wife Michelle, and the couple have lived on a boat for years. He had spent recent years caring for her at home due to severe epilepsy.
Michelle was briefly hospitalised following his arrest but has since been discharged. Her parents have travelled from the United States to care for her while the legal proceedings continue.
