Former Amsterdam city councillor Guido Frankfurther has passed his tram driver exam following several earlier attempts.

He graduated alongside seven other new drivers at the Havenstraat depot after completing a nine-week training programme led by his instructor, Stefan.

His first official shift is scheduled for Saturday, departing from the Lekstraat depot at 06:30.

Overcoming previous training setbacks

The qualification followed a lengthy journey for the former politician, who failed a mandatory reaction test three years ago.

When he began the driver training course last year, instructors asked him to leave halfway through to gain experience as a tram conductor first.

Frankfurther noted at the time that the controls felt like a cockpit, where trying to use the indicators accidentally activated the windscreen wipers.

With his certificate now secured, he said he had proven that he was capable of operating the vehicle.
