This August was the eighth warmest on record in the Netherlands, according to weather service Weeronline.
Temperatures measured in De Bilt reached 20 degrees Celsius or higher on 30 out of 31 days. August 19 was the only day that failed to reach the threshold, logging 19.7 degrees and ending a record streak of 64 warm days.
High temperatures and drought
Heat records fell midway through the month. De Bilt recorded 33.1 degrees on August 13, while Maastricht reached 36.1 degrees.
The following day, temperatures reached 37.7 degrees in Westdorpe and 35.2 degrees in De Bilt.
The month was also drier than usual, with about 67 millimeters of rain compared to the normal average of 88 millimeters. Following a dry July, the ongoing summer drought led to smaller and lighter crop yields.
A hot and sunny summer
The country recorded two heatwaves during August, bringing the total for the summer to five. The overall summer average temperature reached 19.1 degrees Celsius, well above the seasonal norm of 18 degrees.
The month also saw 254 hours of sunshine. August 1997 remains the hottest August on record with an average of 20.6 degrees, while Augusts from 2020, 2022, and 2024 also sit in the top ten.
The month was also marked by astronomical events, including a solar eclipse on August 12 and a lunar eclipse on August 28.
