Rarely lent Matisse painting on view at H’ART

Installation has begun at H’ART Museum for “Chez Matisse – Masterpieces from Centre Pompidou,” a retrospective of French painter Henri Matisse. It is set to run from October 3 through February 14.

The exhibition includes 80 works on loan from the Centre Pompidou in Paris, which is closed for renovation.

Thirty-seven are by Matisse, including paintings, sculptures and graphic works; the rest are by contemporaries and later artists he influenced, including Picasso, Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko.

One key work, Figure decorative sur fond ornemental (Nice, 1925-1926), was unpacked and hung Wednesday morning. A museum spokesperson said it brings together several core ideas from Matisse’s work, with figure and background nearly merging as rhythm, color and decoration shape the image.

A rarely lent painting

Another featured work is La Blouse roumaine (1940), which is almost never lent. This will be only the second time it has left the Centre Pompidou.

Matisse’s work has been shown on this scale in the Netherlands only twice before; the last exhibition was in 2015. Museum curator Brigit Boelens said he “broke with all academic traditions.”
