Stichting Babyspullen, a national foundation giving starter kits to families who cannot afford the basics for a new baby, is short of money in Amsterdam this year.

It expects to need around 700 kits in the city in 2026, a number that rises every year, but pressure on subsidy budgets means the municipality can contribute to only 370.

Each kit weighs just under 20 kilos and holds more than 150 items, including clothes from newborn to size 80, blankets, bottles, care products and toys.

Much of it is donated second-hand and checked by volunteers, and anything missing is bought new.

Requests come through midwives, food banks, debt counselling services and shelters.

Thessa de Bode, a midwife in Nieuw-West, says she sees pregnant clients about twelve times, which builds the trust needed to talk about money problems.

Director Mary Kearney says she understands that the city has to make choices but does not want children to pay the price.

Donations can be made to NL30RABO 0125 9437 33 in the name of Stichting Amsterdammer Helpt Amsterdammer, mentioning babyspullen.
