At 87, Rietje Dijkman still trains at the AV23 athletics track in Amsterdam’s Watergraafsmeer at least two to three times a week.
Her next big goal is to set the world record on the 100 metres when she turns 100.
A Dutch record with two new hips
A few days before her interview, she set a Dutch long jump record in the over-85 category at a five-nation tournament in Germany.
She had hoped for two and a half metres, and after three foul jumps she managed a valid jump of three metres.
She admits long jumping at her age is probably dangerous, especially with two new hips, but says she simply gives it a go.
Her doctor had no idea how it would turn out, because there were no examples of anyone wanting to try.
Running started with back pain
It all began with back problems, when a doctor told her she could either have her vertebrae fixed or take up sport.
She started running at 45 and at first could not manage a single lap, but five years later she could do every athletics event.
If her story makes you want to start running, look into clubs and lessons across Amsterdam.
