A technical failure in the British air traffic control system has led to cancellations and delays for flights between Schiphol and the United Kingdom. The disruption began early Tuesday afternoon when the British National Air Traffic Service (NATS) reported an issue affecting flight departures.
An airport spokesperson confirmed that at least 58 flights between Schiphol and the UK have been cancelled so far. NATS stated that recovering from the error will take time, leaving open the possibility of further delays.
Airspace capacity restricted across the UK
The technical issue hit the flight processing system used to coordinate aircraft safely. In response, NATS reduced the number of planes permitted into British airspace to maintain safety standards.
The restriction has caused a backlog because scheduled departures could not take off as planned. With British airports operating at capacity, incoming flights from overseas destinations are also being restricted.
More than 1,300 flights have been cancelled across the UK and Ireland since the failure began. London Heathrow has emerged as one of the most heavily affected airports.
