City advises against swimming in canals after heavy rain

The municipality of Amsterdam is advising against swimming in the Amstel and the city canals until at least Saturday at 12:00.

Heavy rainfall led to sewage overflowing into open water, degrading water quality across the city.

Health risks and medical advice

During extreme downpours, the sewer system cannot always handle the volume of water, allowing pathogens into surface water. The city warned that direct contact increases the risk of illness, making open-water swimming unsafe for several days following heavy storms.

Swimming in the city waterways is always at one’s own risk, the municipality noted.

Anyone who develops stomach complaints or diarrhoea after swimming should consult a medical professional.
