At least ten new English bookstores have opened across the Netherlands over the past four years, including in Utrecht, Amersfoort and Tilburg.
Existing shops are also expanding their selections of English titles. Figures from the national book market monitor show that one in five books sold in the country is now in English.
Social media and original language driving sales
Much of the rising demand comes from young readers and online communities such as BookTok on TikTok. Science fiction, fantasy and young adult genres are especially popular among this audience.
Readers often prefer books in their original language. Popular television adaptations such as Game of Thrones and Emily in Paris have also boosted interest in English originals, according to the Royal Dutch Booksellers Association.
Dutch fixed book price laws set identical prices everywhere for Dutch and Frisian publications, but foreign language titles are exempt from this regulation.
Community spaces and cafes help independent shops
New shop owners are frequently career-changers who combine book sales with food, drinks and social gatherings to compete with online retailers.
Shop owners note that while online platforms can sell English books below retail cost, physical stores attract customers by offering reading clubs, offline community spaces and cafe seating.
