Plug-in home batteries are quickly gaining ground in the Netherlands, with retail chains like Albert Heijn, Gamma, and MediaMarkt offering them directly to consumers.
These plug-and-play storage units do not require a professional electrician for setup, making them thousands of euros cheaper than traditional fixed home storage systems.
Industry estimates indicate that plug-in units now account for roughly half of all home batteries sold in the country. Demand is expected to rise further as the national solar netting scheme ends on January 1, forcing households to find new ways to manage their self-generated energy costs.
Rising safety and placement concerns
Despite their growing appeal, energy specialists and safety advocates are raising concerns about how consumers install and position these units.
Industry experts warn that buyers often place heavy plug-in units next to radiators or use them as makeshift side tables, creating potential fire hazards during cold weather.
A major technical worry involves high power outputs drawn through standard household wiring.
While standard plug-in units draw and release around 800 watts, newer models on the market can deliver up to 3,600 watts, which can overload older electrical systems or hidden wiring connections behind walls.
Industry and insurer warnings
Solar trade association Holland Solar has urged buyers not to rely solely on automated setup instructions provided inside smartphone apps.
The organization recommends having any home battery system evaluated by a qualified electrician to ensure the house wiring and circuit breakers can safely handle the load.
Insurance representatives have also issued warnings regarding potential fire damages.
The Dutch Association of Insurers notes that while plug-in batteries are typically covered under general home contents policies, insurers may require strict adherence to safety guidelines, accurate reporting, and correct placement before honoring claims.
