Two friends who have known each other since they were two finished a 310-mile (500km) skateboard journey from London to Amsterdam on Saturday 26 September. Along the way they raised more than £3,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society, Macmillan Cancer Support and the road safety charity Brake.
Charlie Hutchings-Sait and Dan Lee, both 30, started in central London and rode through Kent, northern France and Belgium before reaching the city. They called their challenge Pushing for Purpose.
Each day they covered 30 to 35 miles, and each night they camped along the route.
“We’re extremely emotional, tired and achy but overall very happy with ourselves and what we have achieved,” Lee said at the end of the week-long trip. The pair live in New Milton, Hampshire, and Southbourne.
They have skateboarded since they were eight and together run a company in Sway, Hampshire, that makes marine components.
When they reached the halfway point in Belgium after five days on the road, Hutchings-Sait said: “Our bodies are aching. It’s more akin to running and we’re doing more than a marathon each day.
It certainly takes its toll but it’s a small price to pay. We wanted to help those charities who have touched people close to us and help people’s quality of life.”
They found the going much easier once they left the hills of the North Downs in Kent behind. The cycle paths in France and Belgium were flat and smooth by comparison.
“We’ve met some great people,” said Hutchings-Sait. “Some are a bit shocked and we’ve got some funny looks.”
