A sharp shift in the weather is expected to bring warm summer temperatures to the Netherlands next week, with inland areas potentially seeing highs of up to 35 degrees Celsius by Thursday.
According to the KNMI, the national meteorological institute, the country will first experience a mixed weekend before a warmer air mass moves in from the south.
Saturday will start mostly sunny before clouds drift in later in the day, keeping temperatures around 21 degrees on the northern islands and up to 28 degrees in the southeast.
Sunday is forecast to bring rain and heavy cloud cover across much of the country, with temperatures holding at roughly 23 degrees before precipitation tapers off on Monday.
Mid-week temperature surge
The main warming trend begins on Tuesday, with clearer skies pushing local maximums toward 27 degrees.
By Wednesday, daytime highs across the country are expected to range between 28 and 31 degrees.
Thursday is currently projected to be the hottest day of the week, with a 60% chance that temperatures will surpass 30 degrees across the southeastern regions.
Southern inland provinces like Limburg and Noord-Brabant face the highest chance of reaching 35 degrees, while coastal areas will stay slightly cooler due to onshore breezes.
Conditions in the capital
For residents in Amsterdam, temperatures are expected to fall somewhere in the middle of the national spectrum, staying warm without reaching the extreme highs predicted for the far south.
Overnight conditions will also become noticeably warmer across the urban western area, with evening minimums rising from 14 degrees on Tuesday to around 18 degrees by Thursday night.
If high temperatures persist for several consecutive days, public health authorities at the RIVM may trigger the national heat plan to encourage extra care for vulnerable individuals.
For now, forecasters have not issued official weather alerts, noting that the mid-week outlook remains a provisional forecast rather than a confirmed heatwave.
