Paul Haenen steps down as voice of Bert

Paul Haenen is stepping down as the Dutch voice of Bert from Sesamstraat after more than fifty years in the role.

The Amsterdam actor and comedian announced his departure on his television programme Margreet Dolman Begrijpt ‘t on RTL 4.

The death of Ernie actor

His decision follows the death in June of Wim T. Schippers, the fellow Amsterdammer who voiced Ernie, at the age of 83.

Haenen said that after 50 years a new Ernie would feel unfamiliar to him, adding that he wanted to give a new generation a chance.

New voices will be cast for Bert, Ernie, and Grover. Haenen noted that he has arranged with the studio to remain involved in the process.
