Police officers in Amsterdam arrested a 74-year-old man on May 18 on suspicion of committing indecent acts with two underage girls.

The Public Prosecution Service, known locally as the Openbaar Ministerie, confirmed the arrest following initial media reports.

Investigators also suspect the man of being in possession of child sexual abuse material.

Suspect remains in custody

Authorities have kept the suspect in custody since his arrest in May as the investigation continues.

While official sources have not publicly verified the suspect’s full identity, media reports link him to a previously convicted offender who spent time operating orphanages abroad.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on August 24.

Upcoming legal proceedings

The initial hearing will take place at the district court in Den Bosch rather than in Amsterdam.

Dutch criminal proceedings typically begin with preliminary administrative sessions to review the status of the investigation and determine whether a suspect should remain detained before a full trial starts.

Local law enforcement agencies and child protection services work alongside the criminal justice system to investigate offenses involving minors throughout the Politie network across the Netherlands.

Further details regarding the specific charges and evidence are expected to be presented during the upcoming court session.
