After 16 years, Martin Brekelmans (79) and Erik Hoogenboom (61) probably sailed their ferry Ome Piet for the last time on Sunday 11 October.
Despite a long search, they have not found a volunteer to take over the crossing between Badhoevedorp and the Amsterdamse Bos.
Hoogenboom says anyone who takes it on has to be a little crazy.
A short crossing every weekend
Every weekend from April to October, the two neighbours sailed 100 metres across the Ringvaart, from the Nieuwemeerdijk in Badhoevedorp to the woods.
They say happy passengers meant it was never boring.
Hoogenboom recalls a boy who came back two and a half hours after crossing, thrilled to have seen a fawn being born in the woods.
He says a moment like that could keep him sailing for five more years.
Named after a 1950s ferryman
The ferry is named after Piet Eilander, who carried people and horses across at roughly the same spot in the 1950s.
The two men decided to revive the old route in 2009, after a few drinks at a neighbourhood barbecue.
