Plans to redevelop Sportpark Sloten-West are leaning heavily toward turning the area into a dedicated cricket park, local advisory groups have indicated.
The site, tucked between the village of Sloten, the Ringvaartdijk, and the parking area for Tuinpark V.A.T., was previously occupied by hockey club Xenios until 2020.
Minimal disturbance to local residents
While the city is still keeping a BMX track under consideration as a secondary option, project leaders say cricket is currently the frontrunner for the location.
Project manager Berdien Prins noted that cricket offers key advantages for the surrounding neighborhood, including low noise levels and minimal impact on local traffic and parking.
Supporters also point to the growing local demand, driven in part by international workers moving to nearby developments such as the planned Schinkelkwartier.
Information session planned for September
The popularity of cricket has been rising steadily across the Netherlands, leading to a shortage of available pitches nationwide.
The municipality of Amsterdam will host an information meeting to present the broader sports facility plans for the area on Tuesday, September 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Dorpshuis Sloten.
