Fraudehelpdesk has reported a sharp increase in phishing attempts related to online travel platforms over the past six months, with Booking.com targeted most often.
The organization received 1,072 phishing reports involving booking sites from January through June, nearly ten times more than the same period last year. Over 90% of those reports involved Booking.com.
Targeted messages and growing losses
Victims often receive messages that appear to come directly from places they booked, asking for an additional payment. Fraudehelpdesk noted that attackers increasingly possess very specific personal information, which it links to a rise in data breaches over the past year.
Across all types of phishing, Fraudehelpdesk recorded 15,106 reports in the first six months of the year, up from 2,776 during the same period last year.
The agency registered 443 financial victims across those cases, with total recorded losses climbing from 113,574 euros to 491,793 euros.
