Strand IJburg closed to visitors on 1 October and will stay shut until 1 May 2027.
The beach is usually open all year round, but it will not come back in its current form.
When it reopens, it will be smaller and closer to the Pampuslaan.
Most of the beach becomes a building site
The beach is shrinking because a large part of it is needed as a construction and work site for the next few years.
Area manager Carin Bosboom explains that the first step is to clear the existing beach.
Some of the buildings will then be moved to the redesigned beach near the Pampuslaan.
A new lock and water barrier
Once the old site is cleared, work will start there on a new lock.
A water barrier will also be built there, and Bosboom says it is badly needed to keep the area from flooding in the future.
The beach is due to grow larger again after 2031.
