The Art Café in the new skylit passage through the Stopera, Amsterdam’s renovated city hall, was packed on a sunny Saturday afternoon, with mostly young people painting, making collages, shaping clay and cutting lino prints.
The menu offers about eight creative activities, and €25 buys you the materials to get started.
A staff member called the café a huge success and said you need to book to get a seat.
Since spring, four entrances have opened the passage to everyone, with shops, stalls and museums running right through the building.
Museums, shops and food stalls
Nearby, the Museum for Unintentional Art aims to make visitors look at their everyday surroundings differently, while the Neoseum draws tourists to its 20-minute virtual reality tours.
About ten market stalls sell honey products and Asian dishes among other things, alongside around five cafés, though some shops are quieter than others.
Weesp baker Demi van Vliet runs her Club Brood sourdough stand on Saturdays and says trade was busier just after the mid-May opening.
Some units are still empty, but the passage already looks like a welcome addition to the Waterlooplein area.
