Hoofddorpplein is completing a two-and-a-half-year renovation project that has introduced a public amphitheater, upgraded seating, and new greenery to the busy square in Amsterdam West.

The overhaul was driven by local residents Femma Stegenga and Jerry Rijstenbil, who aimed to create a more inviting environment for people entering the city from the highway.

Community-led redesign

The project was funded using €185,000 from local district participation budgets.

Neighbors had the opportunity to vote on several design options, ultimately selecting a layout that incorporates a grandstand constructed from steel and sustainable wood, surrounded by new plants and lighting.

Organizers worked closely with community liaison officers from the Zuid district administration to navigate the planning process, which involved extensive consultation and flyering throughout the surrounding neighborhood.

Official opening set for September

Local residents have already begun using the open space for casual meetings, listening to podcasts, or taking outdoor breaks as final touches are put in place.

The official opening ceremony for the newly renovated Hoofddorpplein is scheduled for September 5.
