Strict rules limit home chargers in Amsterdam West

Municipal regulations forbid running charging cables across public pavements to power electric vehicles. Drivers without private driveways must rely on public charging points designated by the city.

Municipal regulations prohibit running an electric vehicle charging cable from a home across the public street in Amsterdam. The city also bans running cables under pavement tiles through gutters or using cable mats.

Residents can no longer submit individual requests for new public charging stations. The municipality now decides on public charging locations independently.

Private parking spaces remain essential

Home charging points are only permitted on private property, requiring a driveway, garage, or dedicated private parking space. While these are common in parts of Nieuw-West such as De Aker and Sloten, they are rare in densely built neighbourhoods of West.

A private charging setup also places substantial demands on a home electrical connection. Single-phase systems charge slower than three-phase connections, and grid operator Liander faces delays for connection upgrades.

Solar panels and power generation

About one in eleven homes in Amsterdam generated its own electricity by the end of 2025, according to CBS figures.

Smart charging stations can direct excess daytime solar power into vehicles. This feature becomes more financially relevant from 1 January 2027, when the national net metering scheme ends and returning electricity to the grid yields less than using it directly.
