Amsterdam to Utrecht cycle highway takes step forward

A direct, high-speed cycle route connecting Utrecht and Amsterdam has moved closer to reality after regional authorities approved the alignment.

The province of Utrecht, the Transport Region Amsterdam, and four local municipalities signed an agreement on the project, which aims to provide a fast and comfortable cycling connection between both cities.

First proposed in 1990, the route is known locally as ‘Van Dom tot Dam’. Utrecht regional deputy André van Schie said research shows the project’s benefits easily outweigh its costs, describing cycling as a logical and healthy alternative for regional commuters.

The route will run for about 40 kilometres, largely alongside the A2 motorway. Work is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the total budget estimated at a minimum of 57 million euros.

Major tunnel and bridge works

The single most expensive component is the planned Boorstraattunnel in Utrecht, expected to cost 39 million euros.

Scheduled for construction in 2032, it will run between Tweede Daalsedijk and the railway line to Amsterdam, serving new residential districts such as Wisselspoor, Werkspoor, and Cartesiusdriehoek alongside cyclists.

Regional planners are also working to improve the narrow Demkabrug over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. While the municipality of Utrecht examines whether funds can be found for a replacement bridge, interim work will adjust existing hairpin turns and fencing.

Along the canal, the Westkanaaldijk through Utrecht, Breukelen, and Weesp will be converted into a dedicated bicycle street with extra lighting in darker spots.

The plan also includes a link to a future cycle bridge at Nieuwer ter Aa, improved cycling space around the Abcoude train station, and modifications to Abcoude’s existing bicycle bridge.
