Big Band Night: 1930s and 40s jazz in a 1956 art-deco hall

The Jazz Warriors Big Band takes the stage for an evening of big band jazz, the full-blooded sound of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and rhythm section playing together. The big band tradition runs from the swing orchestras of Count Basie and Duke Ellington through to modern ensembles writing new arrangements for the format. Few things in live music match the punch of a full horn section in a good room, and big band nights often draw dancers as well as listeners. The Kompaszaal sits on the KNSM-eiland in the former building of the Royal Dutch Steamship Company, and its ballroom with views over the IJ has become a well-loved spot for live jazz. The setting, with its harbour history and plenty of space, suits a night of swing well. It is worth a visit for seasoned jazz fans and newcomers alike.
