Women of Amsterdam, a walking tour through the city’s history

A guided walk through Amsterdam's past, told through the women who lived, worked and campaigned in the city. Their stories are often left out of the usual accounts of merchants, regents and painters, even though women ran businesses, raised families in hard conditions and fought for education, healthcare and the vote. The Majoor Bosshardthuis suits this tour well. It is named after Alida Bosshardt, the Salvation Army officer who spent decades working among the people of the Wallen and became one of the best-known Amsterdammers of the twentieth century. Seeing these streets on foot shows how much of their history is still there in the buildings, the alleys and the canals. The walk suits residents and visitors alike, and anyone who wants a different angle on a familiar city.
