The OV-chipkaart is being withdrawn, and the operator’s own site now tells new users to travel with OVpay instead.
That changes the answer to “should I get a personal card”, so this guide covers what the personal card still does that tapping a bank card does not, and how to decide between them.
Where Things Stand
OVpay is the current system: you tap a contactless bank card, a credit card or a phone on the same readers, on every bus, tram, metro and train in the country.
There is nothing to buy, no balance to keep topped up, and no card to lose.
The OV-pas is the personal card inside that system, for people who would rather not put their bank card on a reader or who want a balance rather than direct debits.
It can be topped up and set to reload automatically, and it can be blocked if it goes missing.
The old personal OV-chipkaart still functions, but it is the leg of the system being retired, and ov-chipkaart.nl carries a switching tool for moving off it.
If you are arriving now, do not start on the card that is being phased out.
What A Personal Card Gives You That A Bank Card Does Not
Season Tickets And Discount Subscriptions
Travel products are the whole reason personal registration exists: an off-peak discount subscription, an unlimited weekly or monthly season ticket, or a route-specific commuter product all have to be attached to a named traveller.
NS’s off-peak subscription takes 40 per cent off fares outside the morning and evening rush, which pays for itself quickly if you take more than a couple of intercity trips a month.
Check which of these have already moved onto OVpay before buying anything, because the products are being migrated over rather than discontinued.
The Student Travel Product
Studentenreisproduct - free or heavily discounted travel on weekdays or at weekends, depending on which half you choose - only exists on a personal card.
If you are enrolled and eligible, this is not optional; it is the single largest transport saving available in the country.
Group Discount
Samenreiskorting lets people travelling with you claim 40 per cent off their own fares on the same journey.
Your companions load it themselves before travelling, and it applies off-peak.
OV-fiets And Bike Parking
OV-fiets, the rental bikes at nearly every station, is a personal-account product: you pick a bike up with your own registration and are billed per 24-hour period.
It is consistently cheaper than renting a bike in Amsterdam by the day, and it is the reason many people keep a personal account even after switching everything else to a bank card.
Personal registration also gets you free parking for your own bike at NS station facilities for the first 24 hours.
If you cycle to the station every morning, that is the perk you will use most.
Account Features Worth Having
A personal account keeps a full record of every check-in and check-out, which is what you need when you claim commuting costs back from an employer.
It is already itemised, so there is nothing to reconstruct at the end of the month.
Automatic top-up reloads the balance whenever it drops below a threshold you set, billed by direct debit from a Dutch bank account.
You can also request a refund for an incomplete journey - a missed check-out, a failed reader - through the account rather than at a service desk.
Losing a registered card costs you the card, not the balance: block it online and the balance and any travel products move to the replacement.
An unregistered card that goes missing takes everything on it with it.
Which To Choose
Short Stay Or Occasional Travel
Tap a contactless bank card or phone and stop thinking about it.
There is no card fee, no minimum balance and no registration, and the fare is the same one a card holder pays.
Living Here And Commuting
Get personally registered, because the subscriptions are where the money is and they are not available otherwise.
Work out your typical week first - peak versus off-peak, train versus tram - then pick the product, rather than buying a season ticket and hoping.
Students
Personal registration, immediately, for the student travel product alone.
If You Already Hold An Old OV-chipkaart
It still works, so there is no emergency.
Use the switching tool on ov-chipkaart.nl to move your balance and any travel products across before the card stops being supported, rather than after.
